Social Networking

The best comment I have read regarding social network is that: “Social networking may be seen as a digital cocktail party”, in an article entitled: “Security issues and recommendations for online social  network”-  http://www.enisa.europa.eu/doc/pdf/deliverables/enisa_pp_social_networks.pdf
This is true. We can say that we are witnessing a global or networking era. We can simply visit, see and talk to each other while sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned room, or in a plane, and simultaneously listening to iPod music. I agree with Rebecca’s idea to set up an ILS599 Ning group for “continuing discussion” when this class is over.  “Forming communities within the service, connecting with people with similar interest” and general threaded discussions are truly a social asset.

ILS599: Technology Trends in Libraries – Web 2.0

I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Okobi and Ms Rebecca Hedreen for this great and informative course, for the thorough knowledge I have gained, and for the collaboration and strong information of my classmates which enriched this course. I blieve those who have not had the chance to study this course, would have missed a lot, even though if they are acquainted with this technology. From the academic point of view, I am lucky to have taken this course. All participated in enriching the course and pushed it to its success. As I stated in the survey posted right now, I strongly recommend that this course should be 3 months, hybrid or ground.

I will never repent if I would take this course again.

Greatings to all and good luck.

Web 2.0 and the Traditional Library
June 22, 2008, 4:57 pm

I do not agree with the concept of “putting old wine in new bottles”. For; the taste will be the same regardless of the new bottles. The basic idea of the library is there: the dissemination of information on one hand, and the recipients or patrons on the other. It is a “New Era” of information technology, a new taste. There is a substantial difference between the traditional library and the implementation of web 2.0 in reference services. Reading the following blog:
http://blogwithoutalibrary.net/talk/fis2007/1310.pdf
lights are shed on many factors: the traditional library is represented with its reference librarian at a reference desk burdened with patrons questions, with traditional stacks, and a circulation desk, but Library 2.0 goes beyond that. It is a transition to another world of Blogs, electronic resources, the internet and its interactivity for library users, the online catalog, the world of Wiki technology where you can participate in various activities like subject guides, projects, reviews, staff training, learning plans, searching, databases, commenting, electronic resources, planning and decision making. In short, we can say that the traditional library is like the earth with many orbits rotating around her, where these orbits represent the web 2.0 with its many implementations.

One of the best statements with regard to Web 2.0 is that: “Web 2.0″, says Ellyssa Kroski, in her book entitled: ‘Web 2.0 for librarians and information professional’, “is a social phenomenon concerning with linking people to people”. She added:” People can create and consume information on the web.” As Terry says: “I wish we could see 10 years into the future to get a glimpse at how all these ideas in library service evolve”; I do not think Terry that you have to wait for 10 years, it is a matter of every-day change as we have seen in the GPS, digital cameras, google earth, Digital T.V., and e-books. It is like the Rabbit’s womb where a new born generation(s) of technology is coming to life every month.

Blogs vs Wikis

A blog is a sort of online journal, which is daily or weekly updated or whenever the author desires. A wiki, on the other hand is a platform addressed to anyone to update in real time, and worldwide.
The main idea behind the Wikis and Blogs is the issue of information organization. Reverse Chronological order in Blogs, and in Wiki it is the absence of a particular structure. In his article: ”When to Wiki, When to Blog”, Bob Doyle says:” The blog is for the latest news, and the Wiki is for content that may be old but still good” However, “Their dominant method of navigation”, Bob adds,:” is a search engine. Their typical entry point is deep link.”

Hi my classmates,

This is my final project in the framework of my course ILS599 web2.0 at Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT. The Project is a projection of new modern Library intended to be located in Aswan, a city is about 700 miles from Cairo, Egypt.

The New Library will be built on the River Nile in Aswan to function as a nucleus of a growing library. At the beginning, it will house as much as 4500 books, articles, video recordings, tapes, clipping, DVD and documentary films about Egyptian monuments and Nubian heritage.

The Library will be linked to other learning Centers in Egypt and worldwide.

Using Blogs in Promoting your Library’s Service

“Why and how to use Blogs to promote your library’s service”
http://www.infotoday.com/mls/nov03/fichter

As many of my classmates commented, I agree that the article is informative and creative. In an awesome style, the author, Darlene Fichter, enumerates the easiness of creating a blog, and in a sense of humor she orients librarians to dive into this new technology and he explains this step by step showing to them the benefits of blogs to the library. Illustrating Librarians as “ducks” and new technology as “water”, Fichter reflects her simple, yet, strong rhetoric power of writing. Her “marketing” idea of blogging led to a very important point: Library and information technology is now an industry. How to market your products, how to “Reach out beyond the visitor to your regular web site”, how to “send library news straight to the user’s in box on a regular basis”. This is typically the new trends of the the web 2.0 library, to attract users, to tempt them to the Library and to get them acquainted with the new features. She ended his article emphasizing the idea of marketing: inspiration, dedication and motivation.
Excellent article!

Folksonomy and dichotomy: the Merits and demerits
June 20, 2008, 1:08 pm

We all know that tagging is a new trend in web 2.0 and how we attach descriptive keywords to digital objects for possible retrieving in future.  Tags are a sort of metadata, and with this new phenomenon users are able to identify or “tag” contents of their work on the web.

In his article Folksonomy and Dichotomy, the author  Walter Crawford defines folksonomy as tagging, and that folksonomy will be the alternative of “all traditional classification  and taxonomy systems”.  The author is wondering that some commentators are viewing tagging and folksonomy “with less enthusiasm”.  The authors enumerates the cons and pros of tagging between famous databases like Yahoo and Google.

In her chapter about  “Folksonomies and user-based tagging”: Library 2.0 and beyond, Elyssa Kroski comments on the advantages and the disadvantages of Folksonomies. Among the advantages are the Inclusiveness, the Currency, the Non-binary nature and Low cost;  while the disadvantages include the lack of precision, lack of hierarchy, lack of recall.

Meebo/chat Assignment

This is another Chat session conducted with the University Central Florida:

Ahmed Ramadan: Good morning Ref. Librarian, I am an MLS student at Southern Connecticut State University. I wonder if you can roughly give me the number of libraries in the United States which are currently applying wikis? Thanks.
Nola: Hi. I am reading your question and will be with you in just a moment.
Nola: Good Morning Ahmed. Sorry, I don’t have a clue. However, I will ask our Tech Librarian to see if she knows where to look.
Ahmed Ramadan: No problem, the other question which is part of our assignment here at Information and Library Science: How do you rate the service of Chatting and wiki at your library? Are there many patrons? number/week?
Nola: As far as the wiki number goes, can’t help you–this is outside the scope of our chat session for brief research questions. As far as our chat service, I can give you numbers, but not for the wiki.
Nola: Our chat service is good, we do chat and email and just started IM. We have approx.
Ahmed Ramadan: Alright Nola. What about Chat numbers per day? And if you get an answer to my question of number of libraries using Wiki in U.S., I would appreciate it if you would send me the answer at:
Ahmed Ramadan: mohameda1@southernct.edu
Nola: Average Chats/emails a day during the Fall/Spring Semesters is 38
Nola: If our tech librarian has an idea where to look about wikis, I will email you.
Ahmed Ramadan: Nola, I really appreciate your efficiency and your prompt answers to my inquiries. I will recommend this site to my colleagues at SCSU.
Nola: Thank you Ahmed. Have a great weekend!
Ahmed Ramadan: Just one small remark. Why don’t you use another color for the Reply part of Chatting. i.e. your name is in Grey and it is not clear.
Ahmed Ramadan: You too Nola. Thank you.
Nola: Our Chat provider doesn’t allow much changing of their system. Which is one reason we will be changing in the Fall
Ahmed Ramadan: Thanks and have a very nice weekend.
Nola: Thanks
Nola: Bye
